Carabiner: Good Design

A Carabiner is a very well designed, well functioning tool. According to Dieter Rams's ten principals of good design, a carabiner is very well designed for the following reasons: this product is useful and innovative, easy to understand, honest, unobtrusive, long-lived, environmentally friendly, and contains as little design as possible. All of these things qualifies this simple carabiner as an object of good design.

Objectified Response

In the documentary Objectified, design was examined through everyday objects ranging from chairs to a Macbook Pro. Objectified looks at the creative processes of some of the world’s most progressive, ingenious designers, and looks at how the things they make affect our everyday lives. The properties of good design are explained by Dieter Rams, the former design director for Braun, in which he states that design should make a product useful and be innovative, aesthetically pleasing, easy to understand, honest, unobtrusive, long-lived, consistent in every detail, environmentally friendly, and as little design as possible. This documentary looks at how design affects our everyday lives, as well as the progression certain designs have taken through the years, and what design may look like in the future. After viewing this film, I have a much better understanding of what good design is, and how it affects my everyday life.
